Susan Classen, a native of Springfield, Ohio, was name EMU’s “alumna of the year.” The recognitions were made during the Homecoming worship service.
Classen worked in a Richmond hospital one year before taking an assignment with Mennonite Central Committee in Bolivia, where she worked three years with rural health clinics. From 1984 to 1994 she worked in three different locations in El Salvador, focusing on health concerns with displaced peoples and refugees. She wrote a book based on her experiences, Vultures and Butterflies: Living Contradiction, published in 1992 by Herald Press, Scottdale, Pa.
